Igen Weyr - Candidate Quarters
While the barracks are little different from the dorms in layout and appearance, a little time makes it apparent that they house younger people, for the most part. There's also more order; the cots are lined with precision - almost as if laid out on a sleeping chart. The room is kept tidy, and the presses are closed and not leaking belongings. Though not segregated by sex, one side of the room appears to belong primarily to the female candidates, the other to the males, though there does happen to be some over-lapping. In general, the barracks are open, perhaps as an introduction to the more public, collective life of a rider. To one side of the door, a large chore board lists the duties of each Candidate for the day.

It's been a trying couple of sevendays for the candidates. The sandstorms forced them inside for a long while, making many go practically stir crazy from being cooped up so long. Things scarcely improved after the storm ended, given that so many repairs and so much sweeping needed to be tended to. The candidates need a way to relax.

This is what Arva's been working on. Now, she has finally pulled it off. After needling the Weyrwoman for days, she has somehow convinced her to install an oversized brass tub along the wall of the barracks, filled with water which bubbles from an attached techcraft engine. Arva soaks in the water, looking incredibly pleased with herself.

Kyzen was one of those that went a little stir crazy and drove a few of the older boys all the more crazier with his boredom and endless questions and constantly wanting to join in on whatever they where doing (but not getting half of it). Never would the boy have expected to tire of sand so fast but he's quite… DONE with it now. "Not joking about it getting everywhere…" Kyzen can be heard grumbling to himself as he seems to be shaking sand out of his shoes, some of his clothes AND his cot again for what seems like the fifth (or sixth?) time this day alone. Argh! He's seen those tubs though and he'll give up on trying to get the sand out of his things — for now. Enough of the other Candidates have dispersed from the new marvel that Kyzen can now shuffle closer to get a look. "Their… baths?" he queries to Arva.

Arva opens her eyes, waking from her blissful reverie to lazily flop over, leaning on the edge of the bath with her head resting on folded arms. "Baths /with/ techcraft jets." Arva says with a very proud grin. "Just for us candidates. Guess who got these for us? Go on, just guess." From the way she's beaming, it really shouldn't be hard to figure out.

"What're jets?" Poor Arva. She's dealing with Kyzen, who is young but also from a reasonably not-tech updated Weyr (and parents who are slightly tech-phobic). Noticeably, he's not making direct eye contact with Arva, but he is peering curiously at one of the empty baths. "You did?" he drawls with a smirk, catching on to her game. "Who'd you bat your eyes at this time?" Cause it was totally a favour from a guy, right? Like how she got dinner for them that one time?

"They're these bubbly things." Arva explains, sweeping one hand over the surface of the water. "Climb on in and try 'em out!" She says with a grin. The question earns a laugh. "The Weyrwoman." She answers, smirking. "Though it wasn't so much eyelash batting with her. I do have other persuasive techniques, you know!"

"The Weyrwoman!" Well, well. Color Kyzen impressed! "You really spoke to the Weyrwoman and got all this? What'd you do?" He must know! As for climbing in, he seems a bit hesitant but eventually lifts a finger to signal that he'll be back… Which he does in record time (he does want to know the answers, after all!). He's got a not-so sandy towel with him and his swimwear. Testing the water, he'll slip into the one tub and promptly skitters away from the nearest jet when it startles him. "Gah! It tickles!" he protests, probably earning him a few snickers from the others who overhear him.

Arva does look quite pleased with the results of her persuasive powers, beaming as she flips back around to resume lounging fully in the wonderful bubbly water. "I just went and talked to her about how the candidates deserved a little extra reward for all their hard work during the storms. This is the result." She positively oozes pride over this.

Kyzen eventually adjusts to the strange jets, which of course leads to him 'playing' with them by placing his hand as best he can over the opening and searching out where the other ones are. No peaceful lounging and soak in the water here! He snorts, but there's a hint of a grin curving his lips. "It's true… we do deserve something, huh? What made you think of something this… uh… fancy?" Is that the word for it?

"Mostly I was just feeling gross after a sevenday without the chance to take a dip in the lake." Arva says. "And it just so happens we had these tubs in storage. Now the jets, those come from a techcraft boy I know…" Of course a boy factors into this somewhere.

"What's wrong with the bathing caverns?" Kyzen teases but even he knows that that joke can be thrown back at him. He chuckles over the thought of these tubs being in storage but when Arva admits to a boy being involved, he can't help but point at her. "See! I knew it. Do you know everyone?" he muses as he sinks down in the water. Hey, this isn't half bad!

"First of all, they're all the way down the hall." Arva says, her laziness on full display again. "Second of all, they're crowded. Third of all, they don't have these lovely jets!" The last question earns another proud smile. "Everyone worth knowing. I make a point of it."

Kyzen rolls his eyes a bit but it's all in good fun. "I find the jets a bit strange…" But he's getting used to them. "It's true though, the caverns ARE crowded." All the more too when they were all stuck inside. Not fun times! He tilts his head, considering the point on knowing everyone and the worth behind it. "Guess so. I don't know that many folk." Guess he has work to do? He's quiet for a moment, enjoying the bath and the novelty of the jets. "Hey Arva?" Just in case her attention has drifted. "Thanks." Surely she's got plenty of that from the others!

Arva beams. The thanks make it all worthwhile. That and the ego boost. And, of course, the luxurious jetted tubs. "You're welcome, Kyzen." She says, eyes fluttering shut again as she lets herself unwind in the wonderful water. "Don't worry. You know me, and I know everybody. So you're basically there already."

"Really?" Kyzen can be so gullible sometimes, poor kid. He may actually really believe that! "Cool!" That he sort've says under his breath but his grin says it all. He won't pester Arva much further, but he does enjoy the bath for as long as he can and before another Candidate wants a turn. Not keen on sharing, he'll get out and towel off before heading back to his cot. Only to find that there's sand sticking to his feet and legs somehow. With a long suffering sigh, it's back to trying to rid himself of the worst of it before calling it a night and settling into his cot.
