Igen Weyr - Hatching Sands
As if temperatures in the rest of the Weyr weren't uncomfortable enough, the sands are positively blistering. The air shimmers from the onslaught of heat, leaving the area with a hallucinatory feel. Black sands stand currently empty but for the occasional egg-shard or 'print not swept clear. A raised platform of smooth stone provides a lounging-spot for queens or their mates, or a retreat for the lifemates that accompany them from whence they can cool their feet somewhat.
Al'dru ushers in an arriving line of candidates, moving as he does so to talk to a half sleeping Neyuni, who nodding, tells them to be careful of Zuhth but otherwise feel free to touch the eggs out here on the sands. "Well, you heard the lady. Feel free to spread out, take your time and move carefully amongst the eggs, but Zuhth will allow you out here this morning."
Zak stifles his own yawn, having been up super late last night to aid an animal birth. Glancing first towards Neyuni and Zuhth. Bowing once he joins the others heading to the eggs. Despite being Weyrbred he's never actually been out on the sands, legitimately anyway, and he hesitates in an unfamiliar environment. Finally drawing in a deep breath he steps forward towards one egg in particular that's caught his eye
Al'dru continues to talk quietly with the somewhat somnolent Neyuni, only basically getting monosyllablic answers from her but he's willing to be patient and he continues to talk, mostly to hear the sound of his own voice and keep himself awake. Even Zuhth is mostly sleeping, although a wary eye is kept on a few candidates she's worried about.
There's a gasp from Zak within moments of his fingers touching the hardening shell of the River in the Rain egg. "Oy!" he mutters with a self conscious look around himself. No one else seems to have noticed his outward reaction so he once more turns his attention inwards. Closing his eyes he lets his fingers run along the shell and experience the feelings and thoughts presented from the occupant within.
Al'dru is continuing to talk softly, words not intelligable beyond the small circle from where he's speaking with Neyuni, but he still manages to snap out. "You there. What did we tell you about running on the sands? Do you want to be responsible for getting the entire group kicked off?" At the sharp words, even Zuhth is rousing, although with a comment from 'Yuni she settles back down.
Zak lets the other sounds of the sands fade away to a mere murmur in the background of his consciousness. "Ooooh." he says softly and stays with a steely patience for another flicker of recognition.
Zak steps back after a few moments with a dazed look to his eyes. Absently one hand runs through the red curls as he debates which egg next to approach. Finding a pure white one with red banded stripes he approaches it.
Al'dru finally gives up on getting any sort of real conversation of 'Yuni and moves instead to lean on one of the gallery walls where he can watch the goings on. Speaking softly to one candidate that seems sort of paralized by fear as the step close to the eggs but never really touch any of them.
Zak draws a slow breath inwards as he presses a palm close to the white shell. He glances around quickly a something unseen before looking back down to the egg at his hands.
Al'dru is crossing and uncrossing his feet on the sands, trying to cool them off slightly. "Funny, how if you're not invested in the eggs out here, you're much more aware of how hot it is." is whispered in an aside to 'Yuni, although it's debateable if she'll answer.
The heat is indeed forgotten as Zak lets his thoughts drift away with the touch of the egg. Sniffing at the air around him he looks puzzled. "You must be a girl." he murmurs to the red and white egg.
Zak steps back after a little while with a thoughtful expression. "Gone." he murmurs to himself before looking about. The heat of the sands rushes back to his full awareness making the teen pale slightly. "I…need to go." he says in a rush before nearly running off the sands.
Al'dru errs slightly before he nods as one of the candidates takes off the sands in a rush, before nodding. He glances at the other folks. "Alright then. Why don't we all take off. You'll all have other chances out here. So off we go."
